The Equipment.

I truly believe that in order to do something right you need the correct tool for each job. When I started this business, I tried very hard to run on only the necessities. I started with just 2 scanners. A high resolution feed scanner for loose photos and documents along with a standard size flat bed scanner. I realized quickly that a large format scanner would also be essential. I purchased a commercial grade large format “work-horse” scanner a few months later.  Each device provides the best outcome for the photos each family allows me to preserve.

The feed scanner quickly takes care of documents, letters, 8.5×11 kids art work, school papers, and loose photos up to 8×10. The quality is outstanding and digitizes collections quickly. Using this is the least expensive method for the families I work with.

The standard size flat bed scanner is great for items up to 8.5×11. Small photos, delicate lace,  less than 100 slides and 35mm negatives. This scanner can hold up to 4 slides at a time.

The Mega- large format scanner does everything < 8.5×11. In 2019, this scanner has scanned 100 years of College, High School, Jr. High School, and Elementary school yearbooks for one school! This scanner can also tackle a HUGE collection of slides too, handling 30 at a time!

PhotoShop with a Wacom tablet are essential tools to complete each project also. These tools assist in correcting color on images, and minor to major damage on photographs.

Software and storage space is also really important. I use ACDsee Pro for minimal editing of photos and organizing–although it is a full service photo editing software.

I use PowerDirector software for video editing. After digitizing video, Power Director is used for editing out portions of video that are not necessary. PowerDirector helps create menus for DVD’s also.

Other equipment includes: 2 VCR’s, VCR-C tape holder, MiniDV player, 8mm video tape player, an original Super 8 audio player, Wolverine Reel to reel digitizer and many SD cards.

What started out as a dream with 2 scanners has now evolved. I’m sure the evolution will continue as I eyeball another scanner and a beautiful new computer monitor.
